Behavior Specialist

Salary: $60,000

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Behavior Specialist provides clinical oversight, technical assistance, and skill development to program staff regarding all aspects of behavior support services. This position works collaboratively with staff, program supervisors, families, and other support providers in the delivery of behavioral services to individuals supported across assigned programs in residential and / or day services. The Behavior Specialist has a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the agency and may need to work weekends as needed. The Behavior Specialist will also be available to answer phone calls in case of an emergency after hours as needed. They will also provide oversight to the Behavior Therapy Technician in relation to behavioral components of the job.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education:

Master’s Degree in Special Education, Psychology, or a related Human Services Field

Minimum Experience:

• 5 years of pertinent experience, working directly with individuals who have developmental disabilities, including devising, implementing, and monitoring behavior support plans

• Experience completing FBA's and behavior support plans required with individuals diagnosed with I/DD and Autism. Direct experience and knowledge of regulatory compliance in the design and development of residential behavior plans.

• One year of related supervisory experience preferred

•Experience providing training and coaching to residential and/or day program staff in the

implementation of general strategies and individualized programs using principles of ABA and Special Ed techniques, i.e. smart board, alternative systems of communication, sensory diet, etc.

• Preferred: knowledge of PBIS

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSAs):

•Principles and procedures of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA)

•Principles of Positive Behavior Support preferable

•Principles of behavior management and Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA’s)

Required Certification/Registration: FBA (Functional Behavioral Assessment) certified or attained within the first month of employment. Certified as or pursuing BCaBA or BCBA preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Develops, implements, and manages behavioral support services across adult residential and/or day services.
  • Conducts individual functional behavioral assessments and re-assessments, interpreting results and designing ethical and effective interventions that promote skill building and functional behavior.
  • Develops and implements behavior support plans, behavior intervention plans, program plans (goals, on-going services, and special needs).
  • Monitors individual progress on an on-going basis, evaluates and adjusts interventions based on review of outcomes.
  • Provides training and direct supervision to staff members as they implement behavior support and behavior intervention plans which enable individuals to develop skills in the least restrictive environment.
  • Ensures all behavior support and behavior intervention plans are reviewed with the program teams semi-annually and as needed.
  • Obtains necessary written consents for all behavior support plans which contain restrictive interventions; this includes the presentation of the intervention and related consents at the monthly agency-wide Human Rights Committee meeting.
  • For assigned individuals, and in collaboration with the other behavior specialists, utilizes assessments and develops a unified, individualized plan to promote a comprehensive approach and consistent supports across a person’s life in both the day and residential programs.
  • Identifies, develops, and delivers training to staff at all levels, in areas related to behavior management, positive behavior intervention supports and applied behavior analysis.
  • Works with staff members on environmental management, designing and implementing program curriculum in a Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports framework.
  • Manages and addresses challenging behavior as it occurs, designing and implementing reactive strategies that meet safeguards and follow related regulation. Provides proactive strategies to address all types of behavior and emphasizes the development of skills that will satisfy the function in an adaptive manner.
  • Participates in inter-disciplinary team meetings as appropriate.
